| Prevention StepOne® Newborn Screening can detect more than 50 disorders in newborns from just a few drops of blood. This screening gives you the opportunity to protect your baby from the preventable complications of undiagnosed disorders. Many of these disorders are manageable if treatment begins early. The StepOne® materials sold through this Web site have been developed for babies delivered in the United States. Specimens must be collected by U.S. licensed physicians or healthcare professionals. If you live or plan to give birth outside the United States, please call 412-220-2300 or 866-463-6436 to access StepOne® Newborn Screening through one of our local distributors or to become a distributor. Peace of Mind When it comes to the health of a child, any information is valuable information. StepOne® determines the risk your baby is at for a metabolic or other inherited disorder. An abnormal result indicates the need for diagnostic testing to confirm the presence of a disorder. If your baby is diagnosed with one of these disorders, early medical intervention can play a key role in helping him or her lead a normal life—StepOne® is the first step in this process. If your baby's results are normal, the screening will give you peace of mind. Process The process for screening your baby is simple, but it must be coordinated by a physician. Take your StepOne® packet with you to the hospital at the time of delivery. A healthcare professional will take a small sample of blood by pricking your baby's heel and place it on the absorbent filter paper located in the packet. After the sample dries, it is sent to our lab where professionals use different screening methods and equipment to analyze the sample. The results are given directly to your baby's physician. A physician must coordinate the screening process to confirm whether the test is medically appropriate, order the test, oversee specimen collection, and receive a copy of and release the results. If your baby's physician denies your request for screening, you will be provided with a full refund of payment. Always seek the advice of your baby's physician if you have questions or before you stop, start, or change any treatment plan for your baby. PerkinElmer Genetics services and materials are not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. In the United States, state health departments mandate screening for certain disorders. Certain hospitals contract with PerkinElmer Genetics to provide our screening program to all newborns. If your delivery institution is a contracted facility, contact your physician prior to ordering the StepOne® packet to ensure your child will be screened.
