| Each state manages a metabolic screening program whereby it mandates the testing of certain disorders for all newborns. PerkinElmer Genetics is proud to provide state mandated testing for newborns in Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, the District of Columbia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. In certain states other laboratories may also provide this testing. Parents can order the StepOne® parent packet, either online from the PerkinElmer Genetics web site or by calling 412-220-2300 or 866-463-6436. The packet will contain everything needed to have the newborn screened. The parent will bring the packet to the hospital (or to their physician's office) at the time of delivery. A physician must coordinate the screening process, from ordering the test to releasing the results. The test specimen, a filter paper dried blood spot, should be collected 24 to 48 hours after birth to maximize the benefit, although screening later in infancy and childhood can be beneficial as well. The child's healthcare provider is notified of normal results by mail. The results are also available to healthcare providers via our secure web site. Abnormal results will be communicated directly to the ordering healthcare provider via telephone by our Genetic Counselors who are available to facilitate follow-up and answer questions. |
